Built on WordPress, WooCommerce is already on a widely used platform. WordPress offers a powerful way to give businesses what they need.

Sell Products and Services

WooCommerce allows for the sale of physical items to be shipping, digital items to be downloaded, services to be sold or booked, and all other kinds of options. It also allows for variations (like color, size), stock management, and images for each variation.

Highly recognized as being fantastic for SEO, WooCommerce runs on the WordPress platform. I offer Search Engine Optimization as part of an eCommerce or business website project.

Categories, Tags and Attributes

WooCommerce offers product categories, which are the primary way to group products, as well as subcategories. Along with tags which are another way to relate products to each other. Attributes add extra that extra data to your WooCommerce products. An attribute is useful for searching and filtering products.

WooCommerce is open-source. A variety of development options offer almost unrestricted customization to meet your business needs. With WooCommerce, you own your site. WooCommerce is not a proprietary platform or service. The open-source nature and wide variety of development options offer almost unrestricted customization to meet your business needs.

Official Extensions

Over 400 official extensions exist, ranging from payment gateways to shipping and accounting plugins. Companies offer free and premium extensions.

Payment Gateways

WooCommerce, you can accept credit cards, debit cards, cash on delivery, bank transfer, PayPal and other payment processors. Stripe happens to be one of my favorites.

WooCommerce makes shipping and integration with shipping carriers a snap. With some out-of-the-box features and others that you need a developer to set up, these make your time and customers experience awesome.

Some options are you can offer free shipping, flat rate, domestic and international shipping. Some other options like local delivery, local pickup, scheduling a date are all available. What is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is an open-source eCommerce platform built on top of the extremely popular WordPress CMS (Content Management System). WooComemrce adds e-commerce functionality allowing you to have an online store.

History of WooCommerce

In 2011, WooCommerce by WooThemes started as a fork of Jigoshop. That plugin allowed turning a site into a professional e-commerce storefront. That software became what is now WooCommerce. Four years after being created, Matt Mullenweg announced on May 20th, 2015, Automattic was acquiring WooThemes. Automattic (the company that owns WordPress) acquired WooThemes, all 55 team members, and its flagship product WooComemrce.

WordPress needed a solid and unified eCommerce platform and since they have a ton of demand from its users. Acquiring WooCommerce gave Automattic access to a fantastic foundation. WooCommerce has continued to experience explosive growth every year since 2015.

WooCommerce Today

In 2021, WooCommerce is the single most used eCommerce platform in the world.

It holds 40.9% of the market share for the top 1 million websites on the Internet. Shopify is second with 26% of the market share. All other platforms account for 33% combined, including Magento, BigCommerce, Prestashop, and OpenCart.

What is the future of WooCommerce?

WooCommerce ‘s future is bright, and it’s getting better.

I predict WooCommerce will continue gaining market share. It has the advantage of being on WordPress. An advantage is it already has a large ecosystem of plugins and themes and developer support.  By owned by Automattic makes WooCommerce a part of WordPress. The past growth I mentioned the history section allows for even better long-term hopes.
